Having spent the last six years running a few business's in a regional part of Australia I felt compelled to tell you this little story.
How do Australians, Americans, Brits and the rest of the world perceive AUSTRALIA? Think about this for a minute and form an opinion before reading on.
OK now that you have done that little exercise is your Australia more than the sum of the parts of Sydney and Melbourne. I hope so. It's massive, it's dispersed and it's diverse in nature and culture.
I have just been reading a prominent Australian site/Blog which is read by thousands all around the world (particularly aimed at Y-Gen readers in Australia) and this is what it said with regards to a set of live seminars they will be setting out on a road show to perform:
"Oh and if you're not from Melbourne, DO NOT SWEAT also. We'll be coming to a town near you shortly. Sydney is not far away, then we're going overseas. It's all part of the masterplan. We'll be sure to keep you updated. That's if you've signed-up to our mailing list, of course."
One could possibly say that most of the countries "Economically fit" population is within a hundred miles of these two CBD's but to come out and explicitly say that all towns near you are either Melbourne or Sydney in Australia is a crying shame. The article was written by "creative talent" which from their approach screams out to me, we set limits on our audience. The "Australia" outside of the Economic centres of Sydney and Melbourne has a huge amount to offer. Talent is not limited to location, particularly with all the modern Web2.0 applications which allow a free flow of information across the desktop no matter where you are located. I would go so far as to argue that regional Australia places a higher value on communication as they are profoundly more aware of their remoteness. Let's always try and be more inclusive rather than exclusive in our marketing be it online or offline.
